Google Voice alternative

A Google Voice alternative that does not need a Workspace seat per caller

Google Voice for Google Workspace is a per-user add-on, billed on top of a Workspace plan. That suits companies already living in Gmail and Calendar. D Line is a standalone phone system priced per workspace from $20/month, with call menus, ring groups, and an AI agent on both plans. We make D Line; Google Voice details link to Google's pages, checked Oct 2026.

A fair fit check

Who should choose which.

Choose D Line if…

  • You want an auto attendant and ring groups without moving everyone to a higher per-user tier.
  • Some people who answer the phone do not need a Google Workspace seat.
  • You want an AI agent to answer calls, included in the plan.
  • You want business texting, recording, and desktop apps in one phone-first workspace.

Choose Google Voice if…

  • Your company runs on Google Workspace and you want voicemail and texts in Gmail and call routing tied to Calendar.
  • You need eDiscovery across calls, voicemail, and texts for records requests.
  • You have a handful of users who only need a number with forwarding: Starter is the lowest per-user price here.
  • You want calling inside the same admin console and bill as the rest of Workspace.

Switching

How to move from Google Voice to D Line

Do not cancel Google Voice before the port completes. Cancelling first can release the number.

  1. 01

    Set up D Line first

Start a 14-day trial, invite your team, and build call menus, ring groups, and voicemail on the temporary number. Users and extensions are unlimited on both plans.

  2. 02

Get your Google Voice account details

Note the account number, any account or port-out PIN, and the name and service address exactly as Google Voice has them. A recent bill helps.

  3. 03

    Check with your Workspace admin

Business Google Voice numbers are managed by your Workspace administrator, who can confirm the number can be released and help with any port-out details Google asks for.

  4. 04

Request the port in D Line

Sign the Letter of Authorization (LOA) and submit the port from the phone numbers area of your workspace. Porting in is free, and eligibility and timing are confirmed before the move.

  5. 05

    Test, then cancel

When D Line confirms the port, test inbound calls and texts, register texting (10DLC) if you use it, then cancel Google Voice.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does Google Voice cost for a business?

Google lists Voice Starter at $10, Standard at $20, and Premier at $30 per user per month, on top of a Google Workspace plan that is billed separately (checked Oct 2026).

Is D Line cheaper than Google Voice?

It depends on team size and features. Three people on Voice Starter are $30/month plus Workspace, which can beat D Line Base at $20/month. Once you need an auto attendant or ring groups (Voice Standard), five people are $100/month plus Workspace, while both D Line plans include call menus and ring groups.

Do I need Google Workspace to use D Line?

No. D Line is a standalone phone system. It works alongside Gmail, Google Calendar, or any other tools you use, and the Chrome extension adds click-to-call to web apps.

Can I move a Google Voice business number to D Line?

In most cases, yes. Ask your Workspace admin to confirm the number can be released, keep Google Voice active, and request the port from D Line. D Line does not charge to port your number in.

Does D Line have an auto attendant like Google Voice Standard?

Yes. Call menus (IVR) and ring groups are on both D Line plans. Advanced adds business-hours routing and call queues.

Does D Line record and transcribe calls?

Both plans record calls (2 GB rolling on Base, 50 GB with auto recording on Advanced). Advanced adds AI transcription and summaries for about 1,000 minutes a month.
