Google Voice vs D Line: a per-user add-on against a workspace phone system

A fair fit check

Who should choose which.

Choose D Line if…

  • You need an auto attendant or ring groups and do not want every user on Voice Standard to get them.
  • Some of the people who answer calls do not have, or need, a Google Workspace seat.
  • You want an AI agent to answer calls, included in the plan rather than absent.
  • You want unlimited users for one predictable monthly price.

Choose Google Voice if…

  • Everyone already has a Workspace seat and you want voicemail and texts in Gmail.
  • You need eDiscovery across calls, voicemail and texts for records requests.
  • You have a few users who only need a number that forwards; Starter is the cheapest per-user tier here.
  • You want calling billed and administered inside the Google Admin console.

Switching

How to move from Google Voice to D Line

Do not cancel Google Voice before the port completes. Cancelling first can release the number.

  1. 01

    Set up D Line first

Start a 14-day trial, invite your team, and build call menus, ring groups, and voicemail on the temporary number. Users and extensions are unlimited on both plans.

  2. 02

Get your Google Voice account details

Note the account number, any account or port-out PIN, and the name and service address exactly as Google Voice has them. A recent bill helps.

  3. 03

Confirm the number with your Workspace admin

Business Google Voice numbers belong to the Workspace tenant; the administrator confirms the number can be released and supplies any port-out details Google asks for.

  4. 04

Request the port in D Line

Sign the Letter of Authorization (LOA) and submit the port from the phone numbers area of your workspace. Porting in is free, and eligibility and timing are confirmed before the move.

  5. 05

    Test, then cancel

When D Line confirms the port, test inbound calls and texts, register texting (10DLC) if you use it, then cancel Google Voice.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Voice or D Line cheaper for a team of eight?

Eight people on Google Voice Standard are $160/month plus eight Workspace seats; on Starter they are $80 plus Workspace but without an auto attendant or ring groups. D Line Base is $20/month and Advanced $35/month for the whole workspace, including call menus and ring groups.

Does Google Voice have an auto attendant on every plan?

No. Google lists auto attendants and ring groups from the Standard tier ($20/user/month). Starter is for up to 10 users and does not include them. D Line includes call menus and ring groups on both plans.

Does D Line replace Google Workspace?

No. D Line is only the phone system. Keep Gmail, Calendar and Drive; D Line runs alongside them in the browser, the desktop and mobile apps, and the Chrome click-to-call extension.

Which has better call recording, Google Voice or D Line?

Google Voice offers on-demand recording from Starter and automatic recording on Premier ($30/user/month). D Line records on both plans: 2 GB of rolling storage on Base, and automatic recording with 50 GB plus AI transcription on Advanced.

Can a Google Voice number be ported to D Line?

In most cases, yes. Your Workspace administrator confirms the number can be released, you keep Google Voice active, and D Line requests the port. Porting in to D Line is free.
